Bridal Eye Makeup: Do’s and Don’ts

When it comes to deciding how you want to do your makeup for the big day, pay special attention to how you will do your eye makeup. The right amount of eye makeup in the perfectly coordinated shades will not only make you look beautiful but also make your eyes stand out in photos. But before you apply large amounts of eyeshadow and eyeliner to your eyes, be sure to take a look at the do’s and don’ts of bridal eye makeup.

Absolutely do:

  • Hire a makeup artist. The way you do your wedding makeup should definitely be different from the makeup you wear for daily activities. Be sure to try several makeup artists and hire the one you think matches your personal taste and desired bridal style. Having a makeup artist will not only make you look fabulous, but it will also help you keep up with the times and keep you less stressed.
  • Keep eye drops handy. These are great for getting rid of the redness from irritation from those tears of joy you’ve already shed. Be sure to use a brand that your eyes are familiar with. You wouldn’t want to use a different brand and end up walking down the aisle with sore eyes.
  • Get as much as possible. We know it will be difficult to fall asleep that week before the wedding, but try to rest. This will keep your eyes from looking tired on the wedding day. If you do end up with dark circles, don’t worry, just apply a little concealer to hide them.
  • Use matte eyeshadow. This type of shadow won’t reflect light, so your eyes won’t shine too brightly in photos. Also use an off-white matte eyeshadow along the top of the brow to brighten your eyes. Doing this will give it a shimmer factor, but make sure you blend it well.
  • Have your eyebrows defined. Ask your makeup artist to use an eyebrow pencil that matches your hair color. Then ask them to add at least two coats of waterproof mascara.

Absolutely not:

  • Overdo the eye makeup. You don’t want to look like you’re about to go to a costume party. Be sure to do a few trial rounds of makeup to get the desired amount of coverage for your wedding day.
  • Use colored contacts. Unless you use them every day. If you don’t stay away, it may seem like a good idea now, but ten years from now you may think differently.
  • Be too cute or trendy. Some ideas may seem cool to you now, but like colored contact lenses, they may seem silly later.
  • Use an under-eye concealer that is too light. Make sure your makeup artist blends it well with your skin. If it’s too light, it can give the effect of a deer caught in the headlights.
  • Use dark eyeshadows like charcoal, brown, or black. Many times brides try to go for the ‘smoky’ eye effect, but end up looking like they’ve been punched. She leaves the smoky eyes for the club, opting for something more feminine and bridal.
  • Use any eyeshadow that is shimmery, frosty, and shimmery. These types of shadows can reflect light from camera flashes.
  • Absolutely do not pluck your eyebrows on the wedding day. Make sure you do this at least a couple of days in advance so you don’t walk down the aisle with red eyebrows.
  • Use false eyelashes. Unless you are 100% sure they are comfortable and won’t fall off. Remember that if you put them on and don’t like them, they will take a lot of your eye makeup off when you take them off.
