easy to make bird feeders

Making your own bird feeder is the perfect alternative to buying one at the store, and a whole lot more fun. Bird feeders are an easy DIY project for both adults and children to enjoy. Also, a handmade bird feeder will be as attractive to birds as anything you can buy, but considerably cheaper.

The following easy-to-make bird feeders will take a little time and some easy-to-find materials that you probably already have around the house.

Basic Hanging Platform Feeder

Any old plate, metal serving platter, or even a plastic plate can be transformed into a hanging platform bird feeder, as long as you can attach hooks to the sides for hanging. Some people even weave a bracket, much like the ones you’d use to hang flower pots. This will keep the pan horizontal even if the birds land unevenly.

Use Lego pieces for a colorful bird feeder

There are few things you can’t do with plastic Lego pieces, luckily a bird feeder isn’t just one of them. The plastic is weather resistant and the bright colors attract many types of birds.

You can use the lego pieces to make any shape you want, but the easiest to use is a platform feeder or the more advanced version of a “landing platform tower”. Leave space in the middle to fill with seeds and adjust the size of the feeder to the types of birds you want to attract.

A cartoon of milk can be a big hopper feeder

A tall milk cartoon is a perfect hanging bird feeder, but you may want to bring it along when it rains. After washing and rinsing an empty milk cartoon, poke a hole in the top for a hook so you can hang it. Make a square opening near the bottom so the birds can access the seed placed inside the milk cartoon.

Bird feeders from empty cans

If you remove the lid from an empty can and hang it horizontally, the birds will love using it as a bird feeder. The key is to hang it so the seed doesn’t fall out, even when birds perch on the opening. Use a strong string and tie it on both sides of the can, making sure it is angled slightly away from the opening so the bird food doesn’t fall to the ground.

You can decorate the milk cans or cartoons, or add a homemade landing pad at the entrance to make them more comfortable for the birds and more pleasing to the eye.

Mail Tube Feeder

Do you have spare document tubes at home? Clear plastic ones make a durable, cheap, and cheerful bird feeder. All you need is the plastic tube, some popsicle sticks, and a pair of scissors.

You’ll need to cut some small holes in the sides, so you can fit the popsicle sticks through the tube. They will act as mini platforms, and gravity will serve the seeds that are stored inside the plastic tube to the birds when they land.

If you’re feeling inspired, you can easily decorate those tubes with washi tape or paint, but be sure to see how many seeds are left inside. This is a perfect project for those plastic tubes that come with tennis balls, for example.
