How to Write an Accounting Resume That Wins Jobs

It is important to remember the main purpose of your resume. Your resume exists to gain the employer’s interest and make sure you look better than the candidates competing for the job. Ultimately, your resume needs to be so good that an employer would be crazy NOT to interview you!

So what should your accounting resume look like? Your resume should be a maximum of 4 pages. If it is longer, you must cut the content. A common mistake is listing too many details for each job. For every job you’ve done, you should have between 4 and 8 features listed. Each job description should be no more than 2 lines.

There are a number of items you can leave OUT of your accounting resume. To prevent unfair discrimination, which shouldn’t happen but does happen! – your accounting resume does NOT need to include a photo, date of birth, nationality, marital status and number of children.

List your business-related certificates and diplomas. Skip anything related to other types of jobs.


In addition to your accounting or bookkeeping qualifications, what training have you completed? Have you completed any software training such as MYOB or Quickbooks course? Do you have training in First Aid? Include all of that here.

List the software that benefits from use. In particular, be sure to list any accounting packages you are familiar with, eg Xero, MYOB, Quickbooks.

Skills and General Abilities

Include ‘soft’ skills and abilities, like your excellent communication skills, and sell some of your other qualities, like being honest and trustworthy.

Start with your most recent employer. Include his title, organization name, location, and the date range he worked there. Then prepare a list below (5-10 points), include a list of your key tasks,


Have you won any awards, either during study or in the workplace? Don’t keep them a secret, let your prospective employer know! If you have nothing to include here, just remove this header.


Include the name, title, organization name, and mobile phone number of at least 2 people who have been your supervisor or manager at a previous or current place of employment.
