Puppy Training – How To Avoid Sleepless Nights With A New Puppy – Easy Steps To Follow

There are so many things to consider when it comes to training your new puppy and being able to train him to understand that the night has to settle in quickly and with a minimum of fuss and go to sleep along with the rest of the household is a must. be established very early to avoid sleepless nights.

The excitement of having a new puppy can never be underestimated. That cute lump of fluff with big brown eyes and butter wouldn’t melt the expression. Well, stop right there! This lovable puppy will become a dog and behavior that he may find acceptable and able to ignore now is not so easily tolerated when he is no longer a puppy.

Your pup needs to have boundaries set from day one and the hard work you’ve put in since the beginning of training will soon pay off and everyone will have a good night’s sleep.

First and foremost, you must be consistent. It’s not fair to your pup, otherwise he can easily get confused and you’ll never achieve anything.

When you welcome your new puppy for the first time, he will be totally amazed at the new environment he finds himself in. It is very important that you allow him to adjust to his own time. He/she will have been used to the company of litter brothers/sisters and suddenly being pulled out of an environment where the sounds and smells are comforting and familiar to one who is very strange can be a bit of a shock.

It is very helpful if, when you pick up your new puppy, you can bring a blanket or similar from your bed so that you can put it on your puppy’s new bed. This will at least be a familiar scent that you will find comforting. If this is not possible, use something that has their scent on it and place it in your puppies’ bedding. It’s amazing how quickly he’ll get used to how you smell!

As difficult as the first few sleepless nights can be, it is very important that you begin as you want to continue, and tough love is required here.

Put your puppies’ bed in a room where you can confine them, or better yet, use a crate. The last thing you need to make sure of before putting your pup to bed is that he has gone to the bathroom. Once this is done, place him on the bed and say the word bed in a soft but firm tone. Then leave your pup.

What comes next is going to involve time; effort and patience on your part, coupled with a steadfast determination not to give in to those big brown eyes! Yes, your pup is going to whine and whine. He/she has been abandoned as far as he/she knows and at this stage does not feel safe or secure in the strange environment.

Approach your puppy, pick him up by the neck, shake him gently and say the word no firmly. Put your puppy back on the bed and repeat the word bed. You are not being cruel by shaking your pup in this way; in effect, you are imitating what a dog does to her puppies to scold them. Once he/she is back in bed, let him go again. You will find that you have to repeat this action several times before your pup understands what is required of him/her, but it will soon sink in.

You should also be aware that your pup may have soiled himself or on the bedding and is trying to make you notice it instead of making him feel lonely. If that’s the case, it’s all about a quick cleanup with a minimum of fuss and right back to bed. You have to be prepared for the occasional accident.

A golden rule and you break it at your own risk. Never bring your puppy into your bedroom at night, no matter how sorry you feel for him or her. Trust me, you will never sleep alone again!
