See the latest in teardrop campers

Like the original Airstream campers, other campers are also rich in history. A Teardrop caravan is a compact caravan with the minimum needs for a long weekend with the comfort of camping. Originally designed by Louis Rogers of Pasadena, California in the late 1930s, his honeymoon coach plans quickly became popular for their simplicity, convenience, and ease of pulling in smaller vehicles. The light weight and basic aerodynamic structure have remained generally the same, but there have been some modifications from the original basic plan. Most of these differences have been in the improvement of materials and overall quality.

This camper slept 2 indoors with a raised deck lid on the rear exterior of the camper to keep the fridge, stove, food, and kitchen supplies safe and dry. Outside the front door a closed dressing room with curtains was built for private dressing. In the 1940s, a pressurized water tank and running water were added to a sink in the back kitchen. Inside, a small stand-up living room is added for dressing next to the double bed, along with a small closet for clothes and a second separate entrance door with a chemical toilet. The biggest exterior change from the original teardrop campers early on was fiberglass which replaced the tin metal housing.

Today’s campers have many different models and styles to choose from. There are teardrop campers now specifically for off-road use and the usual on-road variations. Body widths, lengths and sizes will vary along with several variations of the interior sleeping area and the galley with steel chassis and a bumper bar. Many are made of aluminum stucco exterior sheets. All motorhomes are built with a reinforced frame, sideboards and running gear. Along with the upgraded entry door, there are sliding screened windows and an air vent window that opens at the top with a durable screen. Along with the nice stereo and compact disc system inside, there are lights in the outside rear kitchen area with a locking cover for the stove unit.

Along with the normal storage conveniences both inside and outside, shelves, have a water supply system and a sink, an eight gallon gray water tank, AC and DC power outlets inside and out and additional underfloor storage underneath. There are also some of today’s campers that have a dining table in the kitchen, sofa / bunk conversions included. Teardrop motorhome prices and models vary and can even be modified to suit your personal needs.
