Basic woodworking cutting tools

If you’re just starting out with woodworking, here’s a list of the basic cutting tools you should have…

cutting saw
The circular saw is used to cut across the grain of wood. Generally used by applying full strokes at a 60° angle

Crosscut saw
Woodworkers often use the crosscut saw to cut against the grain of the wood. The best way to use it is to apply a full and even sawing motion at a 45° angle.

back saw
The back saw is like a rectangular saw with tiny teeth and a stiff spine along the top of the blade. Useful for fine woodworking projects and particularly good for cutting dovetail joints. He has a Japanese counterpart named Dozuki.

dovetail saw
Originally created in Japan, the dovetail saw has 7-inch long teeth for better control. To improve ripping performance, the saw teeth have been modified on the western version. You can use the dovetail saw to apply diagonal cuts for the occasional crosscut shoulder.

saw
Ideal for cutting metal objects. It is also often used to cut thin wooden blocks and strips. Easy to exchange the blades. and match the material you want to cut.

keyhole saw
The keyhole says that it has a narrow blade that allows it to cut along curves or short distances. Very useful in those sections of the project where it is difficult to insert a normal saw.

Adze
This is a tool used for smoothing or carving. It is similar to an ax but with the head mounted perpendicular to the top of the handle.

Pliers
Side Cutters – Typically used to cut electrical wires. The jaws are at an angle that allows you to cut just the cable jacket.

Bent Tip Needle – Used in tight or hard to reach areas.

Needle Point – With long, slim jaws, this tool can help you get into very tight areas.

Lineman’s Pliers: Used to cut and twist cables.

Slip joint: They have a slip joint to better grip larger items. They often come with a built-in wire cutter. Slip joint pliers typically have both flat and curved surfaces on the jaws.

bit reinforcement
It consists of a crank, a knob and a chuck. Usually used with auger bits or spoon bits. However, the brace bit is usually compatible with other drilling devices.

Spokeshave
The Spokehave is a cutting tool made of 2 handles in a line with a small aircraft-like cutter mounted right in the middle. There are all kinds of rasps for spokes on the market, both in wooden and cast iron bodies.

Reamer Type
The taper reamer is a cutting tool used to convert cylindrical mortises to cone-shaped designs.
