Kitchen Design – The Golden Triangle

If you’re new to the world of kitchen design, you may not have heard of the Golden Triangle theory, but you sure will soon. So here’s the lowdown to make sure you don’t look dazed and confused when faced with the jargon.

The Golden Triangle is a theory that underpins kitchen design, ensuring that you create a functional space that works as it should and not just an aesthetically pleasing kitchen that is a nightmare to work on. To achieve the Golden Triangle, you group together the three things you use most in your kitchen. In most kitchens, the placement of these three objects typically creates three points in the shape of a triangle, hence the ‘Golden Triangle’ theory.

When your design is complete, it will be easy for you to carry out your daily tasks in the kitchen because the things you use most often are within easy reach and not at opposite ends of the room.

Interestingly, the Golden Triangle is not always a triangle. Some people have kitchens with everything nailed to one wall, often referred to as a “galley kitchen design.” With this form of cooking, it is obviously impossible to create a triangle, but the same principles should still apply. Group the appliances you use the most together to minimize the amount of ground you have to cover to accomplish the simplest tasks, it’s really just common sense.

Plan carefully, think logically, and use your common sense. Don’t get so carried away with how you want your kitchen to look that you forget the fundamental purpose of the room.
