Moms who work from home: the sure formula for success

When contemplating how to become a work-from-home mom, one stands a better chance of success if certain principles are established and followed. In any endeavor, there is always value in learning what has made others successful and then trying to put into practice those precepts that have worked for others. Stay-at-home moms in particular have a huge advantage here, because if they are able to plan their time, they have every opportunity to run a business from home, while enjoying raising their children.

The following principles would be very important to use in any business, but even more so in a business that you can run from home. If you can start your business venture with all of these elements intact, you will have a better chance of success, that is if you are willing to apply yourself and work hard over a period of time.

  1. You must have a product that people want to buy. That might sound a bit silly at first, but when you think about it, why reinvent the wheel? Start with a product or service that is already in demand and that once people find out you are offering it, they will come to buy it.
  2. You should be able to start the business with as little startup capital as possible. Forget most franchises, since you’re talking about several thousand dollars. Most stay at home moms have only a small amount of capital available, so it’s a real factor. You need to find something that you can start with very little, with the only startup costs being perhaps a small startup fee, and business card expenses and a simple website being the only basic startup costs.
  3. You must have a situation where you have someone who knows what they are doing as a mentor for you. You’re probably smart enough to figure things out, but it’s always wise to have someone who’s “been there” giving you advice. It just shortens the time.
  4. You have to be working with a vendor or home office that has a track record that is reliable and financially stable. Many companies have failed when this was not the case. How disappointing to have painstakingly built your marketplace to a successful level, only to have it disappear because your vendor went under without warning.
  5. Your product should be such that its demand makes people buy from you again and again as they reorder and it should be popular enough that they tell their friends and family about you.
  6. You need to be organized to the point that as your business grows, you can move right into the day-to-day running of your ever-expanding company without missing a beat.

Of course, there are plenty of other “success tips,” but if you could tie just these 6 principles together, you’d have an excellent chance of overcoming the usual problems that plague many new entrepreneurs. Let’s face it: having a product or service that is in high demand, locating the people who want to buy from you is the biggest part of the battle. All you have to do in that situation is plan how to get customers to your door efficiently.

Keep in mind that there is no such thing as instant success. Anything worthwhile will take some time to get started, promote who you are, and develop a good customer base. Once you have achieved that, you will find that people will tell their friends and family about you and that is the best form of marketing there is.
