Debuting on HBO, Sex and the City had a unique opportunity from the start. Instead of having to deal with the rules and regulations printed and enforced on many shows that air on basic cable channels, Sex and the City was given considerable creative freedom to do whatever it wanted: being on HBO, the series had very few limitations when broadcast. it came to language, nudity, drugs and, of course, sex. As a result, the four girls from Manhattan that the show so gracefully introduces were able to be as real and brutally honest as they wanted, something that contributed greatly to the show’s success. Sex and the City essentially accomplished what many shows of its ilk before it couldn’t: convey an honest, painful, joyful sense of emotion revolving around the world of thirty-something sex. A topic that had been kept under control before, Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbes pull off the impossible by turning their sex lives into a popular talking point: who else can make such a claim other than perhaps Paris Hilton? and her love life was not broadcast in HD clarity)!
Each girl is dynamic and unique in her own respect. Carrie, a writer and narrator on the show, is a girly girl who knows how to hang out with the guys; Even though she doesn’t play sports very often, she’s more than happy to have a beer and some fried food. the course of an episode. Samantha is a sex-crazed, self-empowered woman who loves style, class, and perhaps most of all, men. Her character speaks to all the romantic members of the audience, sitting at home wishing they could find a perfect man for them too. Completing the quartet, Miranda is a lawyer and speaks to all professional women who are having trouble balancing love with a budding and successful career. While all the girls have jobs that they take seriously, Miranda is portrayed as the professional of the team and her problems with her love often revolve around her busy and demanding work schedule.
Each of the girls have issues that relate to their personal (albeit fictional) lives, but most of these issues are meant to relate to a broader audience. With thousands upon thousands of people flocking to their televisions to watch these girls through their many romantic misadventures, it’s vital to the longevity of the show that the audience can relate to them in some way. Sex and the City managed to pull this off and has over a decade of seasons running in syndication to prove it.
