Some museums in Jos Plateau State, Nigeria

There are two popular museums located in the same place in the city of Jos. They are the; Jos Museum and the Museum of Traditional Architecture of Nigeria (MOTNA).

Among the many fruits of tin mining now enjoyed by the Plateau State is the Jos Museum, which was established to house the many exhibits of archaeological interest that were constantly excavating the alluvial flats in search of tin. The museum is built at the foot of a granite hill lined with trees and near a wooded stream. It is mainly dedicated to the archeology and ethnography of the Plateau area, but it is also the center of prehistory research for the entire Nigerian Federation. The first to be established in Nigeria, the Museum is noted for its relics of a highly sophisticated and widespread culture named after the village of Nok in southern Zaria. The Nok culture flourished over a wide area of Nigeria around 2,000 years ago and produced some remarkable sculpture in terracotta.

Examples of sculptures from across Nigeria give the visitor an insight into the wealth of traditional Nigerian culture and other exhibits, including the Plateau stone age, as well as the skills of local artisans.

The Jos Museum is also famous for its rich collection of traditional ceramics from the country displayed in a triangular enclosure of trees and ponds.

A Museum of Traditional Nigerian Architecture (MOTNA) has been established in Jos. This section of the museum is mainly concerned with reproducing past and extant original and fascinating architectural designs from different parts of the country.

Opposite the Jos Museum is the Jos Zoological Garden, which houses different types of animals, reptiles and birds. Near the Jos Museum is the Bright of Benin restaurant. The restaurant replicates the house of a Benin boble man.
