Starting your crown molding project

Crown molding can enhance any room in any home, but sometimes the thought of a new project can be daunting for the average homeowner. Here is a step by step guide to get started with your project.

Step #1 – Plan your project. The first thing to do is measure the size of your room to find out how many crown moldings to purchase for your project. Standard crown molding lengths are 8′ and 12′. Visit your local home improvement store or do research online to find the type of crown molding you want to install in your room, and make sure the one you choose fits within your budget.

Step #2 – Planning the installation. If you are a DIY type, then a thorough examination of how you will install your crown molding is a must. Do you plan to do it alone or will you ask for help? There are some great tools out there to give you an extra set of hands. Figure out where you will start and where your seams will be in the room. Plan so that your seams are in the most inconspicuous area of the room and always use wood glue on your seams so they don’t open up along the way. It’s also a good idea to cut some inside and outside corner templates to keep next to the saw so you can keep mistakes to a minimum!

Step #3 – Finishing keys. Once the crown molding is done, it’s time to caulk and fill the holes. Use at least a 40 year old putty to keep shrinkage and cracking to a minimum. Then apply wood putty to the nail holes, sand lightly, and now you’re ready to paint.

Step #4 – Paint. Hopefully, you plan to paint the entire room so that when you paint your wreath, you can apply the paint without having to worry about a clean line. It is much easier to cut the trim while painting the walls. Try to use color combinations that make the trim stand out! You’ll be so much happier with the way your crown molding idea comes to life! The only thing left now is to enjoy the new look you have created!
