Stephanie Ericsson, "The ways that we lie"

In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson, the author describes the many ways in which humans lie and justifies the reasons for doing so. There is the white lie, which is basically a harmless lie rather than a harmful truth. Basically, the facades are changing your personality while ignoring the simple facts, as the title indicates, it is a false action done with the intention of deceiving. Deviating is not answering the question at all; it is being frank about comfortable issues and not revealing the very important couple of issues that change everything.

The omission is simply when you say nothing instead of lying; this changes the story as it did with the omission of Lilith from the Bible. Stereotypes create lies because the actions of a group of people, like groupthink, caused serious disasters like Pearl Harbor. Blatant lies are easy, and firing is simply avoiding lying altogether. It seems that Ericsson believes that lying is important to avoid hurting people’s feelings and to be successful and happy.

I agree with Ericsson up to a point. It is true that lying can hurt feelings and a simple and harmless wrong truth would have solved that problem. However, the author also claims that she tried to go weeks without lying and found it almost impossible. I think this shows that the author could be a compulsive liar and therefore all the justifications she gave us were also lies. Either way, lies are important, but not when you lie all the time.
