Car Accidents Happen (Part 2) – Seeking Medical Attention

Car accidents often result in injuries to the parties involved. In 2012 alone, North Carolina reported more than 100,000 traffic collision injuries and more than 1,200 deaths. In this second installment of our 3-part series, we will discuss what to do if you are injured in a traffic collision. Part 1 discussed the steps you should take immediately after a car accident occurs. Part 3 will address the reasons for not speaking with the other driver’s insurance company.

Immediately after a car accident

While you are still at the scene of traffic collision injuries, make sure everyone is okay. Sometimes injuries will show up right away. However, because accidents are often traumatizing and the people involved can be left in shock after the accident. This reaction to a car accident can prevent you from immediately realizing that you have an injury. Therefore, if you suspect that you have been injured in a car accident, you should seek medical attention.

Seeking medical attention

Not all injuries sustained in car accidents are serious injuries, so waiting for hours in a crowded emergency room may not be your best option when seeking medical treatment. Be aware that there are many options to choose where to go. Decide how serious you think your injury is and visit a local emergency room, urgent care, or your GP.

Regardless of where you seek treatment, always inform your doctor of all the places where you are suffering. For example, if your main problem is your knee but your neck also hurts, be sure to mention both. Also, always use your health insurance card to pay for medical expenses. This will create a paper proof that could be useful later when you need to prove the true cost of your injuries.

After seeking medical attention

When you visit a doctor, or any other healthcare professional, they will give you instructions on how to treat your injuries. It is very important that you follow the instructions your doctor gives you. Also, if the doctor asks you to follow up with another appointment, make that appointment and go see your doctor. This also creates more evidence of the medical treatment you needed as a result of your car accident, as well as evidence of your actions after the accident. The more proactive you are, the faster you will recover and the more prepared you will be if you face legal action as a result of your accident.
