Happiness is a warm bike

I have admitted it. Last year I left the mountain bike in the garage all summer. I was ashamed of myself, but the reality was that injury and laziness contributed to my serious lack of riding a bike. This summer I am definitely going to get the bike out of its comfortable resting place. There are several good reasons for this.

Do more exercise.

It’s so easy to take the car back to return a DVD or have some milk … or … uh … wine. So I’ll dust the cobwebs off my backpack, put it on, and happily pedal to the store. In my defense, this plot was hatched a few years ago, but one of my stepdaughters needed my backpack. Sorry, sorry. Time to put the squeak in the squeak and ride your bike around the neighborhood. I need the exercise. Just 30 minutes a day will help you tremendously.

Gas prices scare me.

Every time I fill up, I give the fuel pump a painful wince. It’s kind of like a surreal horror movie these days seeing the numbers go up at the bomb. And my hard-earned money is flying through my tailpipe. It’s really getting ridiculous. I’m glad I didn’t get that Hummer. It’s a joke. By taking my bike out (or even walking!) I’m sure I’ll save loads of cash by leaving the modern car in the driveway and walking or biking to destinations. And gas prices are going up even more! Therefore, the savings will increase each time the power of the legs or the pedals is put to good use.

By not using the car I help the environment.

Duh. Let me see … we have global warming, the polar ice caps are melting, and there were a record number of hurricanes last year. It seems to me that we can all make an effort to achieve a cleaner environment. Leaving your car at home sounds like a great first step in making the air a little cleaner.

Let’s summarize.

If you have a bike, start using it, if not, go out and buy one. A bicycle will give you exercise, save you valuable gas money, and help Mother Nature. Or walk.

Enough talk.
