What do parakeets eat?

Parakeets (more precisely known as parakeets) are like most other birds, enjoying a varied diet rather than the same seed every day. So what do you feed your little feathered friends? Parakeets are vegetarians so they enjoy a good balanced diet of seeds, vegetables and fruit.

So what kind of fruits do we give our parakeets? Parakeets are known to love a wide range of fruits, including tangerines, apples, and pears. If you want to be really adventurous, you can also try some tropical fruits! Fruits are an important part of a budgie’s diet, so be sure to meet your little budgie’s dietary needs and give him a slice of apple in his cage from time to time.

Different fruits in different places can add a bit of excitement to your budgie’s life, as well as valuable nutrients! Use feeding time as another time to bond with your parakeet, share an apple, hand feed tangerines, or even prepare a moist lettuce leaf for your parakeet to eat and bathe in!

You can also mix your parakeets’ diet with a variety of green vegetables. Your parakeet will enjoy things like broccoli and/or cauliflower greens, bok-choi, collard greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, and even seaweed. However, you do need to be a little careful, as some vegetables can have negative effects on your parakeet, including calcium deficiencies and liver problems.

A good diet can be critical when breeding budgies and can make the difference between healthy and unhealthy chicks! For these reasons, it is very important to have a piece of cuttlefish bone and also a mineral block for your parakeet in your breeding cage.

Parakeets love to eat a number of different seeds, but people are often surprised that they also enjoy eating different nuts and grains! Budgies will also eat things like lentils, beans, almonds, tofu, and even sesame seeds.

As you can see, budgies eat a wide range of different fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, and seeds, so you can easily add some entertainment and variety to their life by giving them more than the standard budgie seed mix. Like any animal with higher intelligence, parakeets need stimulation and excitement! Ideally, you’ll keep a pair of parakeets together to entertain each other, but even then, a mixed diet can really make the difference between a sad, unhealthy parakeet and a happy, playful parakeet.
